Special Lecture on Bishop Pierre Claverie - Blackfriars, Oxford

In 1996 the Dominican bishop of Oran was assassinated. This special lecture by his fellow friar and friend, Jean-Jacques Pérennès, examines Claverie's life and death in relation to his deep commitment to inter-religious dialogue between Christianity and Islam. Fr Pérennès is the General Secretary of the Dominican Institute for Oriential Studies in Cairo, and is the author of a recently translated biography of Pierre Claverie, A Life Poured Out (Orbis, 2007).

2009 Aquinas Lecture - Blackfriars, Oxford

The Theologian to the Papal Household, Fr Wojciech Giertych OP, will deliver the 2009 Aquinas Lecture on St Thomas' understanding of human freedom. Fr Giertych was formerly a Professor of Moral Theology and Assistant to the Master of the Order with special responsibility for the Intellectual Life.

Contemplative Prayer - Christian and Buddhist - Blackfriars, Oxford

A special colloquium, 'Drinking from the Hidden Fountain: Meditation, Prayer and Contemplation in the Buddhist and Christian traditions,' will be held at Blackfriars on the afternoon of 29 May 2008. Blackfriars is delighted to announce that the keynote address will be given by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Inaugural John Henry Newman Lecture - Oxford

His Eminence Cardinal Walter Kasper, President of the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity, will give the first in a new series of annual lectures organised by the Catholic Halls of Oxford University. The lecture series, sponsored by the Catholic Herald, honours and promotes John Henry Newman's vision of a rich mutuality between the Christian faith and the intellectual life: of faith as constantly seeking understanding, and of reason as perfected in faith. Distinguished speakers will explore the relationships between philosophy, science, history and theology within the modern university, and how Catholic thought can enrich contemporary culture.

Assunta Kirwan Lecture 2008 - Blackfriars, Oxford

The Assunta Kirwan Lecture for 2008 will be given by the Revd Professor John Barton, the Oriel and Laing Professor of the interpretation of Holy Scripture at Oxford University. John Barton is the author of Reading the Old Testament, and co-editor of the Oxford Companion to the Bible.

Special lecture: Borders and strangers - Blackfriars Oxford

The Rt Hon John Battle MP will give a special lecture on 'borders and strangers: justice, peace, and asylum' as the second part of our study-day following on from the morning's Assunta Kirwan lecture. John Battle has been Member of Parliament for Leeds West since 1987, served as a Minister of State at the Department of Trade and Industry and then at the Foreign Office between 1997 and 2001, and became a Privy Councillor in 2002. He is a member of the International Development Select Committee, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Friends of CAFOD Group, and the chair of the UK Branch of Parliamentarians for Global action. He is also chair of the All parliamentary group on overseas development and chair of the All party group on Columbia. He is vice-chair of the All party group for Debt, Aid and Trade.

The third of our annual colloquia on the thought of St Thomas Aquinas will bring together speakers from Ireland, Scotland, and America: Prof Ralph McInerny from Notre Dame, Prof John Haldane from St Andrew's, and Dr Fran O'Rorke from University College, Dublin. Registration fee (to include buffet lunch) £10. If you are interested in attending this event, which is primarily intended for academics and postgraduate students, please email the secretary. A number of places will be reserved for members of the Dominican Family.

Aquinas Lecture 2008 - Blackfriars

The 2008 Aquinas Lecture will be given by the Revd Prof Lawrence Dewan OP. Fr Dewan is Professor of Medieval Philosophy and Metaphysics at the Dominican University College in Ottawa and a member of the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas. In 2006 he received the Maritain Medal for Scholarly Excellence, conferred by the American Maritain Association. He is the author of Wisdom, Law and Virtue: Essays in Thomistic Ethics (Moral Philosophy and Moral Theology) published byFordham University Press (2007). Fr Dewan will lecture on "St. Thomas and the Perennial Need for Metaphysical Renewal."

Las Casas Lecture 2007 - Blackfriars, Oxford

Fr Chrys McVey OP spoke eloquently before an audience of sixty on the importance of embracing the other and openness to difference as he addressed interreligious dialogue in this year's Las Casas lecture, The Land of Unlikeness. For the first time at Blackfriars, this lecture was recorded live by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and you will be able in the near future to listen to that recording here on-line. Chrys McVey is a member of the Dominican Province of Pakistan where he worked for many years before moving to Rome where he currently serves as Socius for the Apostolic Life to the Master of the Dominican Order. He is a corresponding member of the Dominican Institute for Oriental Studies in Cairo.

The Ethics of Climate Change - Blackfriars Oxford

Blackfriars Hall, with assistance from its Visiting Fellow Dr Michael Oborne of the OECD, is hosting a one-day colloquium on ethical responses to climate change from a Christian perspective. The event will bring together eminent scientists, theologians, policy-makers and economists, to look at sustainable, practical, and virtuous ways forward.

Bacteria, Evolution, and the Grace of God - Blackfriars, Oxford

As part of the events for the University's Alumni Weekend, Blackfriars will be sponsoring a special lecture by Prof. Liz Sockett, Professor of Bacterial Genetics at Nottingham University, who will look at the relationship of science and religion from the perspective of her own academic discipline and journey in faith. The lecture will be followed by a buffet lunch. This event is free for Blackfriars alumni. The registration fee for others who wish to attend is £5. Blackfriars alumni and others should register by emailing the secretary.

International Young Leaders Network Meeting - Blackfriars, Oxford

Applications and nominations are now being sought for the next International Young Leaders Network (IYLN) colloquium to take place in Oxford from September 10th to 16th 2007. If you are, or know, someone aged 18 to 33 who wants to combine Christian ethics, social analysis and world class skills training with like minded people from a rich variety of backgrounds and nationalities IYLN is the place for you. Previous speakers have included Amabassdors, Cabinet Ministers, Bishops, and leading academics and the intensive week combines prayer, study and practical workshops with off site visits. This year's spekers include a leading banker, the Editor of a national newsppaper and a leading figure in international development.
