Introduction

'...for preaching and the salvation of souls'
- Fundamental Constitutions of the Order of Preachers

Blackfriars Priory is a community of more than twenty Dominican friars living a common life of prayer, study, and preaching in the centre of Oxford. They are members of the Order of Preachers, an international religious order in the Catholic Church, with a history stretching back nearly 800 years. The friars are known as 'Dominicans' after their founder, St Dominic, and in the Middle Ages were known as 'Black Friars' after their black cappa or cloak which they wear over their white habits.

All are welcome to join the Dominican community for Mass and the Divine Office, which are celebrated publicly every day in the Priory church.

For further details of the times of services, see 'Times of services'.

The Studium or Study-house of the English Dominicans is based at Blackfriars. Here friars from the UK and beyond are joined by members of other religious orders in preparing for ordination by the study of philosophy and theology. Blackfriars Studium also welcomes lay people who may study for certificates and diplomas in philosophy and Catholic theology.

For further details of study-options, see 'Dominican Studium'.

Blackfriars Hall is a Permanent Private Hall of the University of Oxford, which is run by the English Dominicans. Members of the Hall are normally mature students who read for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees or are Registered Visiting Students of the University. Students normally study philosophy and theology, though Visiting Students may also study English Literature, British History, or Classics.
